How to Set Up Ledger Live and Your Hardware Wallet Correctly

Install the app, verify the device, add accounts and install coin apps, plus the settings and sending routine that keep keys and addresses honest.

Ledger Live is the companion app for a Ledger hardware wallet: it installs coin apps onto the device, shows balances, and builds transactions that the device then signs. Setting it up properly takes fifteen minutes and prevents the two mistakes that empty wallets, a recovery phrase typed somewhere it should not be, and a receive address that was never checked on the device screen.

Install and verify the device

1. Install Ledger Live from the manufacturer package or your bundle and run it as administrator.
2. Inspect the packaging and cable when the device arrives, and treat an already-initialised device as a red flag.
3. Connect the wallet and let the app run its genuine-device check.
4. Update the firmware through Ledger Live only, with your paper recovery phrase beside you.

Initialise and write down the phrase

1. Choose to set up a new wallet unless you are genuinely recovering an existing one.
2. Write the recovery phrase on paper, in order, by hand. Never photograph it, never type it into a computer.
3. Confirm the requested words back on the device screen, which is what proves your written copy is correct.
4. Set a PIN you use nowhere else and leave the lock screen enabled.
5. Send a small test amount in and out before moving anything significant.

Accounts and coin apps

In Ledger Live, add an account for every asset you hold. The first time, the app asks you to install the matching coin app on the device; keep only the apps you actively use, because storage there is limited. Balances come from public keys, so the app can display them, but nothing can move without physical confirmation on the device. Name accounts after their purpose rather than their coin, and keep separate accounts for savings, trading and experiments.

Sending and receiving

1. Open the account and choose receive to generate an address.
2. Verify the full address on the device screen before you share it. That single step defeats clipboard malware.
3. When sending, build the transaction and then confirm the amount, destination and fee on the device.
4. Send a small test transfer first when the destination address is new.

Settings and troubleshooting

Enable the passphrase feature only if you understand it: a passphrase creates a different wallet from the same seed, and losing it loses the funds. Set the fee according to how quickly the transaction must confirm, since overpaying on a quiet network is wasted money, and export your account list before a firmware update just in case. Discreet mode is worth switching on if other people can see your screen.

If the app cannot see the device, try another port and cable, because charging cables often carry no data. Sync errors are almost always network or firewall issues rather than a hardware fault. And if the device is lost or broken, the recovery phrase restores everything on a replacement, which is the only reason the paper copy matters more than the hardware itself.
