How to Install TeamViewer and Set Up Secure Remote Access

Install the full client, enable unattended access with a personal password, and lock the connection down with 2FA and a whitelist.

TeamViewer gives you unattended access to a home PC, a work machine or a relative's computer from anywhere. Installation is a two-minute job; the real work is enabling unattended access and locking it down so nobody else can use it.

Install the full client

Download the full installer rather than the QuickSupport single-file build, which is designed for one-off sessions and cannot be configured for unattended connections. On Windows 11 the installer asks whether you want to install or only run: choose Install, then pick Personal use if that applies to you.

Steps

1. Run the installer and select the default installation, which includes remote control and file transfer.
2. Choose how you will use it, Company or Personal, non-commercial.
3. Create a free account or sign in, so the machine is attached to your account.
4. Let the installer finish and open the main window. The ID on screen is how others reach this computer.

Unattended access

In the main window, open the connection menu and set a personal password: long and random, not something guessable. Assign the computer to your account under Options, General, so it appears in your list from any device. Then test it properly by connecting from a phone on mobile data, not from the same network, so you know it works when you are away.

Lock it down

Turn on two-factor authentication for the account itself. In the security settings, grant access only to your account and accept connections only from the whitelist you define. Enable the option that blocks connections after several failed password attempts, and disable file transfer if you do not need it. A machine exposed to the internet should never carry a short password.

Everyday use

For moving files, open the file transfer tab inside a session instead of dragging files onto the desktop: it is faster and survives a dropped connection. When the link is slow, lower the quality in the session toolbar, because a blurred screen you can control beats a crisp one with a one-second delay.
