How to Install NordVPN on Windows and Configure It Properly
Install the client, pick the right protocol, enable the kill switch, DNS leak protection and split tunnelling without breaking local devices.
NordVPN takes five minutes to install and about five more to configure sensibly. It works fine out of the box, and the settings below are what prevent the usual complaints: a DNS leak, a dropped connection mid-download, or a tunnel that ignores a local network drive.
Installation
- Unpack the installer and run it as administrator.
- Accept the licence agreement and let it install the network driver it requires.
- Sign in with your account details when the application opens.
- Approve the Windows network permission prompt; the tunnel will not come up without it.
- Open the settings screen once before connecting, so nothing surprises you later.
Your first connection
Quick Connect picks the fastest nearby server, which is the right choice for browsing and streaming. When the exit location matters, choose a specific country instead. Leave the protocol on NordLynx: it is the fastest option and avoids the overhead of the older OpenVPN tunnels. On a restricted network where nothing connects, switch to OpenVPN over TCP as a fallback.
Settings worth turning on
Enable the kill switch together with the option to block the internet when the app exits, so a crash does not silently expose your real connection. Turn on DNS leak protection, and keep the threat protection module active for ad and tracker filtering. Use split tunnelling when a work VPN, a printer or a local NAS has to stay outside the tunnel. Add those apps or subnets to the exclusion list rather than switching the VPN off entirely.
Everyday notes
A ten to twenty percent speed drop over wireless is normal for any VPN, so judge it against a wired baseline. If a site blocks you, change servers rather than protocols. Before torrenting, pick a server that supports it and confirm the kill switch is on. When the app refuses to connect after a Windows update, reinstall the tunnel network adapter and reboot, which fixes most post-update failures.
Keep it current
Let the application update itself: stale tunnel clients are behind most connection errors that appear after a Windows feature update.
