How to Install FL Studio on Windows 11 and Set Up Audio Correctly
Install FL Studio, pick the right ASIO driver, scan plugins and fix the crackling that hits almost every new setup.
FL Studio runs happily on Windows 11, but audio is where new users get stuck: without a proper ASIO driver you get crackles, latency, and one application stealing the sound card from another. Here is the install plus the audio setup that makes the studio usable.
Before the install
You need Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, 8 GB of RAM as a floor and 16 GB or more for large projects, plus about 4 GB of disk space for the application and sample packs. If you use an audio interface, install its drivers first, because FL Studio will then pick up the device automatically on first launch.
Installation
- Unpack the archive outside your Documents folder to keep sample paths short.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Choose separate locations for the program and for VST plugins, ideally a plugin folder you can scan in one pass.
- Keep the bundled ASIO driver selected during setup.
- Finish the install and reboot before the first launch.
Audio settings on first run
Open Options, then Audio Settings. Select your ASIO device, open the buffer panel and start at 512 samples, which is roughly 11 milliseconds of latency and stable on most systems. Drop to 128 or 256 only after you confirm there are no underruns. Enable multithreaded processing and smart disable if you use many plugins at once.
MIDI and plugins
If your MIDI keyboard does not respond, go to Options, MIDI Settings and enable the input device; set the output to none unless the keyboard has its own sounds. Then run a plugin scan from the Plugin Manager and let it finish, because stopping it halfway leaves half your VSTs missing and they will not appear again until you rescan.
Common problems
Crackling under load is almost always buffer size or the Windows power plan: set the plan to High performance and disable USB selective suspend for your interface. No sound at all usually means another application holds the device exclusively, so set it to release the driver when in the background. Playback stutter on a heavy project can be cured by rendering the busiest channels to audio and working from those.
