How to Install DaVinci Resolve Studio on Windows (GPU Setup Included)
A clean install of Resolve Studio plus the first-launch GPU and project settings that decide whether the timeline plays smoothly.
DaVinci Resolve Studio covers editing, colour grading, Fusion compositing and Fairlight audio in one application. The install itself takes ten minutes; the part people struggle with is the first-launch GPU setup, because Resolve performs badly if it picks the wrong device. This guide covers both.
Check hardware before you download
You need Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, 16 GB of RAM (32 GB for 4K or heavy Fusion work) and a DirectX 12 capable GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM. Studio benefits from a second GPU, but one modern card is fine for 1080p and light 4K. Free up around 20 GB for the application, the gallery and the cache.
Installation
- Unpack the archive into a folder you will keep.
- Run the installer as administrator and accept the licence.
- Keep the full component set selected, including Fusion, Fairlight and the control panel drivers.
- Choose the app drive, but remember that cache and gallery live beside it.
- Finish and reboot once, so the GPU driver and the app register cleanly.
- Launch Resolve and enter the Studio key from your package if it is requested.
First launch: get the GPU right
Open Preferences and go to the Memory and GPU tab. Set GPU processing mode to your discrete card manually instead of leaving it on Auto, because Auto often selects an integrated chip on laptops and everything feels sluggish. Disable hardware decoding for codecs your card does not support: mismatched decoding is the usual cause of dropped frames in the viewer.
Project setup that pays off
Set the cache drive to the fastest SSD you own and cap the cache size, otherwise it will quietly fill the disk during a long grading session. Create one project library per project rather than a single giant one, and enable automatic backups to a second location.
When something goes wrong
A viewer full of coloured noise usually means an outdated driver. Crashes right after launch are typically a damaged database: rename the Resolve database folder and let the app rebuild it, then re-import your projects. If audio playback fails, switch the Fairlight audio device away from the default system output and back again.
Studio also includes the Neural Engine effects, which download their models the first time you use them. Keep an internet connection available for your first project, or import the offline model pack if one is included with your build.
