How to Download and Install Internet Download Manager

The 25 MB build, the browser integration step everyone misses, and the connection settings that matter more than the advertised speed boost.

Internet Download Manager is a 25 MB utility in the Software section of the catalog, under Internet. It splits a file into segments, downloads them in parallel, resumes interrupted transfers and takes over downloads from your browser. The install takes a minute; the configuration is where the difference between 'faster downloads' and 'banned from a file host' is decided.

What you need

• Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11. Any browser works, but integration is best in Chrome, Edge and Firefox.
• 25 MB for the install. Set the default download folder on a data drive rather than the system drive if you download large files regularly.
• No extra components. Anything else offered during setup is not required by this build.

Download and install

1. Open the Internet Download Manager item page from the Software section and download from the button at the top.
2. Run the installer as administrator and accept the default install path, which keeps browser integration working across updates.
3. On first launch IDM asks which browsers to integrate with. Tick the ones you actually use, then let it install its extension.
4. Restart the browser. The extension only attaches to a fresh process, which is why integration appears to fail on the first try.
5. Open the toolbar menu in the browser and confirm the IDM extension is enabled, not merely installed.

Settings worth changing

1. Options, Connection: leave the default connection count alone unless downloads are slow. Pushing it to the maximum makes servers throttle or block you, and it never helps on a slow line.
2. Set the default download folder and a separate temporary folder on the same drive, so partial files are not competing with the system drive.
3. Enable the download queue with a start time if your connection is shared. Scheduled downloads are the feature people forget exists.
4. In the file types tab add the extensions your browser handles badly, such as large archives, ISO images and video containers.
5. Turn off automatic update checks. A pre-activated build can lose its activation when an update replaces the patched files.
6. Set the speed limiter to around 80% of your line speed if video calls stutter while downloading.

Working with video and batches

The video capture panel detects media streams on a page and offers them for download. Use it for streams that the browser will only play, not for anything the site explicitly protects, and prefer the highest available quality since re-downloading costs more time than the extra megabytes. For image-heavy pages, the site grabber can pull every file of a chosen type at once, which is far faster than saving them individually.

When something stops working

If the browser never offers IDM on a download link, reinstall the integration module from the install folder, then restart the browser. Downloads that stall at 99% mean the server does not support segmented access: lower the connection count to one for that file and it will finish. If the extension disappears after a browser update, re-enable it in the extensions page, since major browser releases disable sideloaded add-ons.
